How do I sight-in my QC Ranger?

Savage Systems QC Ranger

Instructions

Check List Prior to Calibration

1. Make sure your bow is properly tuned and is the same draw weight as you will be shooting after calibration.

2. Make sure your arrows used for calibration are the same as what you will be shooting after calibration.

3. Shoot on near level terrain only.

4. Do not shoot in windy conditions.

5. Use good shooting form with every shot.  Shoot for groups, not for just one arrow.

6. When shooting at various distances, don't forget to change the clicks or you are likely to lose arrows.

7. Do not shoot arrows that are bent or with torn fletches.

8. Shoot only in good visibility and with a well-defined horizontal line on your target. (Suggestion, use a piece of tape across your target).

9. Do not hurry your shots as your calibration skills affect all of your shots afterwards.

Calibration Instructions  (Very important, read carefully!)

Your Speed Indicator window must be set correctly in order for your sight to work correctly.  There are two ways to set it. One way is to shoot your arrow through a chronograph to get your speed. Then, set the Speed Indicator.  The other way is to calibrate it by shooting from two pre-determined distances as instructed below. The latter is the most accurate way to set your Speed Indicator window as the chronograph records your speed only at a close distance when your arrow is the fastest. Therefore, your chronograph should be used only as a reference. In doing so, if your arrows are hitting high, turn your Speed Indicator knob counter clockwise toward the faster end of the scale.  If your arrows are hitting low, turn your indicator knob clockwise toward the slower end of the scale.  After each time the Speed Indicator knob is changed, resighting in is mandatory using your sight adjustment only (not the QC Ranger). The calibration instructions below records your arrow speed over the entire distance in real time situations exactly like you will incur in the field and are the most accurate.   We highly recommend you calibrate your Ranger to the speed of your arrow by the following method:

1. Set your Yardage Selector at 20 yards and your Speed Indicator window at 300 fps.

2. Measure from your target out to one of the following distances that you can shoot accurately, 40, 50 or 60 yards, on near flat terrain.  We suggest one-yard increments be used beyond 20 yards or an accurate laser range finder.

3. Sight in your bow at 20 yards using the vertical adjustment at the base of your sight.  Do not move the Yardage Selector from the 20 yard mark or your Speed Indicator knob from 300 fps. Use other vertical adjustments on your sight as necessary.

4. Re-adjust your Yardage Selector to your choice of 40, 50, or 60 yards.  Of the three choices, choose the greatest distance that you can shoot accurately and consistently.

5. Shoot from one of the distances above. If your arrows are hitting low, simply walk up to the distance that allows your arrows to hit your target without changing anything on your Ranger or sight.  Then, record that distance, as you will need it for your Conversion Table.  If you are hitting high, back up until your arrows are hitting and record that distance for later use with the Conversation Table.

6. Select the correct Yardage Conversion Table that you had set on your Yardage Selector. For example, if your Yardage Selector was set at 60 yards and you had to shoot from 30 yards in order to make your arrows hit, your actual speed was 215 fps as noted on the 60-yard Conversion Table.)

7. Set your Yardage Selector at 47 yards (right angle) and adjust your Speed Indicator Window to the speed (fps) that you took from your Conversion Table.

8. IMPORTANT LAST STEP!  Re-sight in your bow at any distance with your Yardage Selector set at the actual distance from which you are shooting.  (Remember to shoot for groups, not just one arrow).

Now you should be able to shoot from any distance from 20 to 70 yards with just a quick click with vertical accuracy to match the exact speed of your arrow. (Every click should hit on).  If you do not have vertical accuracy at all distances on your Yardage Selector, you may have missed some portion of the instructions and should try to follow the instructions again.  If problems still exist, give us a call on our dime at 800-545-4868 and we will be glad to help.  Enjoy your new QC Ranger and the sport of archery.  Good shooting!  The "Savages".

*Formula for Conversion Tables: 40-Yard Table (40) divided into speed setting of (300 fps) times the distance shoot from (26 yards) equals the feet per seconds (195 fps) that should be set into your Speed Indicator Window.  You may use this formula for any distance. Good shooting!

How do I sight-in my Savage Pendulum?

Sight your Savage Pendulum in on the ground at 20 yards on any near level surface just as you would any ground sight. It's just that simple!

What is the best stand height from which to use my Savage Pendulum?

Savage Pendulums work best from stands between 10 and 20 feet, but is effective at other heights as well.

What is my effective range using a Savage Pendulum?

That depends upon the speed of your bow. For most modern compound bows, you should be able to shoot from almost directly underneath your stand out to about 30 yards (depending on the speed of your bow) without having to hold over or under to hit your target. Slower bows may get less than 25 yards, while faster bows will get more than 30 yards.

With the Dually sight pin, you can get extended yardages from the tree and/or on the ground.

The Dually pin is adjustable while the "flag" pin is fixed and should not be adjusted up or down.

My Savage Pendulum is starting to make noise. What should I do?

Your Savage Pendulum should be very quiet when shot either on the ground or from the tree.  If noise should occur, check the set screw that goes into the end of the axle to see if any side-play exists. If you have side-play, make sure your set screw has sufficient friction to hold in place while under the vibration of your bow. If your threads are not tight enough, wrap a little plumber's tape around the set screw and re-install.(DO NOT use a thread lock substance as the substance may attack the threads.) Make sure there is no side-play in the axle while allowing the pendulum to swing freely. Also, you may put a little medium weight grease around the ends of the 1/8" axle. Dampening devices on your bow are a great help.

Can I change the sight pin in my Savage Pendulum?

Yes, the pins are interchangeable. Our Night Hawk 1, the Tritium pendulum pin, our FiberGlo pin, and our Fiber Optic "flag" pin all fit into the back pin hole in the bottom of the pendulum dually swing. Remember also, the fiber optic "flag" pin is available in red, green, or yellow fiber optics.  We offer a greater selection of sight pins than anyone else in the business. Changing these pins will not affect sighting.

Can my Savage Pendulum be converted to a fixed pin sight?

Yes, but you need to purchase our 93043 which is 3 fiber optic ground pins or 93045 which is the 5 fiber optic ground pins. Remove the pendulum and mount the ground pins in the slot on the side of the sight guard. You can also substitute our Night Hawk ll ground pin for one of the fiber optic pins.

What is the best Fiber Optic color to use?

That may depend upon your background and/or lighting conditions. In hunting conditions: red is best in good light; green is second best in good and low light; yellow is best of all in very low light. Not all fiber optics are equal in quality. We use only the brightest and strongest fiber optics. If you order directly from the factory, you can specify your color of fiber optics and type of pin.

How can I protect my Savage sight?

Our camo sight cover (Product Number 45000) can protect your sight when not in use or while in transit. One size fits all Savage sights and most competitors' sights. Secures firmly to your sight with Velcro.

What launcher style can I get on a Drop-a-Way?

Our Derringer Drop-a-Way comes with a "V" spoon with molded TeflonŽ tip launcher. You can order the Derringer Drop-a-Way in black or camo anodize or with an Overdraw bar.
